Joanne Orchids

Orchids from my Sissy! (Chips aren’t mine)

We were blessed with bountiful storms this past spring and beautiful blossoms are in full bloom! When I visited my sister over Memorial Day weekend, she was so sweet enough to surprise me with these orchids to celebrate that I’m returning to my teaching career.

♪We got to †pray† just to make it ☼today☼.♫

Bon Jovi sings, and MC Hammer raps The TRUTH! And I, for one, indeed live every single day by this: no day is complete without prayer.

Sunshine

Way to get through the day, all day everyday: PRAY!

This Thirsty Thursday quench unravels the H and 5 W questions of prayer.

How

Growing up, many of us were taught certain ways to pray, such as:

  • kneeling and bowing down while folding our hands
  • genuflecting and doing the Sign-of-the-Cross for those of us who are Catholic
First Communion

Throwback Thursday: My First Communion

However, we may not always engage in formal rituals when we pray, depending on our activities during the day.

Why

Some may pray for their wants and needs, but the essence of prayer is

to be closer to †GOD† and listen to His plan.

Therefore, we pray for His will and His way to guide us to His calling. Also

we praise and glorify Him; hence give Him THANKS.

When

The times of day when we pray don’t have to be limited. We can be in constant communication with the LORD. Here are a few of mine:

Where

Anywhere on GOD’s green Earth is the perfect place to pray. Church is an obvious spot where we worship together. This morning, I have my Adoration hour at the Chapel, and one of my prayers at the Blessed Sacrament actually mentions that while we pray there, we also must pray where prayer is scarce.

What

While there are prescribed prayers, the fact that we’re living and breathing GOD’s Word is most important. There’s so much scripture for us to incorporate in our prayer, so it is a manner of really letting those verses from the Bible soak in. If we absorb these passages instead of simply going with the motions by just saying those words, then we’ll capture what prayer is all about:

letting †GOD† into our ♥heart♥.

My Catholic onfirmation

Throwback Thursday: My Confirmation

Who

To whom do we pray? To GOD, of course, or the higher power in whom you believe. Those of us who are Catholic also may have special prayers for the patron saints, who led their lives serving the LORD and set examples to strive for holiness.

5:55 ~ make a †prayer†!!!

I wear jeans to the gym!

This was from Working Out Gets Girls* one of Rick’s Man Tutorials, starring Philip Wang of Wong Fu Productions. Ok, so I wouldn’t go that far (unless they were a stretchy pair of jeggings that feel like yoga pants without showing camel toe). Actually, the only times when I’d wear jeans to the gym were when I worked at my local gym a decade ago.

Well, the weekend before last, I hit the track with my folks for the first time in a long while after Church.

My mom told me that I wasn’t dressed up appropriately.

Sandals and skirt, really?

My footwear were toning flip flops …

Not your typical workout gear

Work those leg muscles {Fit Flops in black Rockstar bedazzled in Swarovski crystals & bronze; Reebok EasyTone (my most effective); Skechers Tone-Ups (the sister sandals to the Shape-Ups MBT-type sneakers)}

… and my bottoms were a running skort.

Running Skirt

Exercise in comfort and style ~ putting this to good use @ Walk to End Alzheimers [2013] {running skirt/shorts combo from C9 by Champion}

I’d recommend these pieces when you’re on-the-go: walking while doing errands, but definitely not these open-toed shoes while you’re doing higher-impact or more strenuous exercise: running, tumbling, lifting weights, etc.

An outfit that I work out in actually offers resistance as I move!

Today, I look forward to going to the base gym (which, in my opinion, has the most top-of-the-line amenities compared to the rest of our citywide health clubs) with Evie! Enjoy your summer training sessions with a workout buddy to have fun, whether on the run or in the sun☼

†GOD Bless the U.S.A. Happy Belated Memorial Day♥

I hope that you all took the time to toast tribute to our service men and women who sacrificed their lives for the sake of our nation’s freedom! My favorite veteran, my dad, was the Airman with whom I commemorated our fallen military members, along with my mom, my sister and her Marine/my brother-in-law. Our late paternal great-grandfather actually was a soldier, and my great-uncle, who is my late maternal grandmother’s only surviving sibling, was a sailor man…

This past weekend, my mom’s birthday celebration continued with the Journey concert in Dallas on Memorial Day Eve. Joanne, my sis, actually bought our family tickets before the holidays last year! Since the show that opened with Tower of Power and also featured the Steve Miller Band was outdoors, I just wanted to be laid-back and down-to-earth. However, I now reminisce about other concerts that I attended and will present to you my get-up for a few of them…

Faith and fellowship.

These are two Fs that I live by.

20140522-210443-75883698.jpg

We each have our own unique relationships with GOD, as long as we maintain them. But our interaction with Him transcends beyond keeping the communication between just us two. My priest has been pointing out in his homilies this month about the importance of being united in our faith together. His message has really resonated in me in my exposure to those with whom I worship, particularly today.

After my Adoration this morning, I had breakfast with my buddy from church to discuss my mission now that he’s partnering with me to plan it. Then I joined my friend, Evie, and her family, for the blessing of their land where they’ll build their new home. Evie took me to lunch afterward, and we engaged in great conversation about GOD’s calling in our lives. We agreed that He speaks to us in different signs, even when we’re not in prayer.

Surrounding ourselves with positive people who share similar values helps shape us in GOD’s image of someone who supports and seeks support from loved ones, like JESUS did as he carried his cross. Believing in Him and leading our lives for Him makes life worth living.

Have a blessed ***Memorial Day*** weekend!

Beauty Tuesday: Tips from my Mom, the Birthday Girl

Happy Birthday, Nanay ☼

Today is my beautiful mom’s birthday, so this is a tribute to her.

Image

Birthday Gift to NANAY: Rose Crucifix for LOLA ROSA from my friend EVIE‘s store, Lovely Gift

You know that saying, If you want to know what a girl will look like when she’s twice her age, look at her mother (or something to that effect)? Well, my mother still looks radiant to this very day, and she’s exactly twice my age, so I’d like to think that when I reach her age, I’ll also look and feel as gorgeous as she does. She is healthy and active, vibrant and enjoying life…

Here are the lessons that my Nanay/Mommy Aya has taught me that I take at face value:

  • Eat breakfast everyday for energy
  • Wear makeup to look presentable
  • Always smile 🙂
  • Don’t cry for any guy because no man is worth your tears
  • Be brave

I admit that I haven’t always followed my mother’s advice, but as her mom, my maternal grandmother, Lola Rosing, told me:

Mothers know best.

And so far, they’ve always been right, even when I didn’t agree. Let’s love our mothers because they gave birth to us and guided us as we grew, and if they’re still around after we’re grown, they don’t stop… Because a mother’s job is never done.

Sunday Fun Day: Drinking’s Ups & Downs

In Community, Health, Home Sweet Home, Public Interest, Relationships, Sunday Fun Day, Travel, Weekly Wonders, Yours Truly on 05/18/2014 at 17:55

Getting crunk can have its advantages and disadvantages. Here’s the obvious:

Drink in moderation.

But there are times when some of us have our moments. You may get carried away when you’re celebrating a special event, like graduation this time of the year, birthdays, weddings, etc. Just make sure you

DON’T drink and drive.

This Sunday segment is split into two sections: first the fun part and then the morning-after part. Been there, done that. Enjoy my Top 5 lists with a glass of wine or a frosty mug! {Photos from Creative Stock}

Top Five Drinking Games

When it’s time to get crunk and drunk, games bring drinkers together for healthy competition and entertainment. They call for coordination and strategy, even with a buzz, and warrant kicks and grins. Be creative by making up rules as you go and stay good sports until the end. Please remember to play responsibly.

Game1

Cheers to these most popular drinking games at parties and bars alike.

[Involving old-fashioned liquid courage, blocks, cards, coins and sports-inspired cup tricks, winners can prevail even with a buzz.]

5. I Never

This truth-tell-all game that appears on Drinknation and Webtender has been a favorite among party-goers and campers alike because it is simple and requires no equipment, except your liquid courage, of course. All you do is tell the crowd around you something you’ve never done and everyone else who has will drink to that. If you say, “I’ve never done jail time,” your fellow drinkers who have will take a swig.

Game2

“I Never” can be played around a bonfire.

4. Jenga

As if this blocks game wasn’t already a struggle while sober, drinkers can rise to the challenge of “Jenga,” which appears on Webtender and is frequently played at bars and parties. Your mission is to ensure that the tower stays intact during your turn, but if it topples, then bottoms up. Just don’t pull a party foul by knocking the tower over on purpose because nobody likes that guy (true story).

Game3

“Jenga” with a twist: playing while drinking.

3. FUBAR

Short for “Fouled Up Beyond Any Repair,” among other relevant acronyms, this Barmeister Top 100 card game played at many a party has rules for each card that you draw. Be prepared to be Thumbmaster with a 7 or join in a Waterfall with a King. “I Never” also makes a cameo when you pick a 6. Regardless of what the card holds, be prepared to consume, resume and get FUBARed.

Game4

Only the cards will tell… Read them and drink.

2. Quarters

As an original drinking game that also ranks high on the Barmeister Top 100 and has made its way to bar tables and party stairs, put your shooting skills to the test by bouncing a quarter (or another coin or bottle cap) from a table or other hard surface into a container. Filling up that cup, glass or jar is optional, but drinking up is required of those who the successful shooters choose when they toss up.

Coins

The flip of a coin can hit or miss…

1. Beer Pong

This most popular of drinking games, as shown on the Barmeister Top 100 and social events, ranging from celebrity benefits to college mixers, combines ping-pong and basketball.

Pong

Pong can be played on any surface that will get wet afterwards.

You shoot, you score, your opponent chugs from that cup the beer, not the ball. Hopefully, you can maintain your aim, both in this game and when you break the seal and take a leak afterwards.

Pong2

Play with caution! Have some fun in the sun!

Top Five Hangover Remedies

The morning after: you wake up with your head pounding like a ton of bricks and feel compelled to hurl yourself over to the porcelain gods (the nearest toilet). Sound familiar? Next time you drink like there’s no tomorrow, try these likely surefire holistic ways to cure your hangover. Word of caution: when you consume alcohol, know your limits or at least hand your car keys over to a trusted designated driver and have a buddy who will watch your back so you don’t go home with the wrong person.

Hangover1

You can mend your hangover without medicine or coffee.

5. Detox with Soothing Measures

Temperature differences may aid in recovering from your drinking spree. A hot bath or shower can release toxins from your alcohol consumption, and inhaling the steam can alleviate your senses. For headaches, a cold compress or covered ice pack can provide relief.

Hangover2

Suds up after your round of bottoms-up.

4. Take Vitamins, NOT Painkillers

If you’re going to pop a pill, be wise and take multivitamins, in particular those rich in Vitamins B and C and magnesium, which can nourish the body back to health. Do NOT take acetaminophen (Tylenol), which imposes more work on the liver to metabolize the alcohol and can debilitate it in the long run.

Hangover3

A vitamin does a sobering body good.

3. Eat, Drink, Be Merry

Eating BEFORE, DURING and AFTER drinking is essential to preventing or at least treating a hangover, preferably food that replenishes depleted levels of nutrients and comforts tummy aches. Dr. Mehmet Oz and Donna Cardillo, RN, both swear by eggs to ease hangovers because they contain cysteine, an amino acid with antioxidants that combat liver damage caused by the toxin acetaldehyde. Carbs, such as from crackers, rice or toast, can absorb alcohol and raise blood sugar levels that tend to drop with alcohol consumption and ease abdominal queasiness. Bananas offer sugar and potassium; tomatoes, honey and lemon contribute fructose; and ginger root boots out nausea.

Hangover4

Chow down so alcohol doesn’t bring you down.

2. Drink Plenty of Fluids

Since alcohol and caffeine are diuretics that can dehydrate your system, opt for water, juice, tea, sports drinks or bouillon-based soup to rehydrate yourself. Pure H2O is your best bet to flush out alcohol, yet non-alcoholic and non-caffeinated post-hangover drinks also can be refreshing. Try water mixed with lemon juice and a dash of salt or tomato juice with a hint of salt, lemon and pepper (or a Virgin Mary mocktail – as opposed to a Bloody Mary cocktail) or ginger tea for calming effects. If you choose to engage in low-impact exercise as your body recuperates, make sure that you stay hydrated with water or electrolyte-enriched beverages, such as coconut water or sports drinks.

Hangover5

Drink up, without spirits.

1. De-stress with Rest

Since alcohol is a depressant, consumption will lead to grogginess and fogginess. Even if you knock out soon after drinking, you still may feel fatigue when you wake up, on top of dizzy and nauseated. Give yourself extra shut-eye to recharge and get yourself back on track.

Hangover6

Time may be on your side to heal and feel zeal.

Last, but not least:

DON’T drink and cook!

I speak from experience!

Have fun … and

Drink responsibly!

5:55 ~ make a wish!!!

Study Saturday: Catholic Church & School

Separation between Church and State… What’s that?

When I taught college, I didn’t lead my classes in prayer because we were in public schools. However, I did inform my students that I am a woman of faith, and I occasionally requested moments of silence out of respect for people or incidents that I believe deserved our attention.

My Ph.D. is from Our Lady of the Lake University, a Catholic school, so I’m grateful for my faith-based education. Before our classes, we would pray. Every year, we would have our Convocation at Church, where we would light candles to illuminate. After we passed our first year luminary exams, we earned these medals.

20140517-222442.jpg

Our fourth year symbolized our candidacy, upon completing our final set of comprehensive exams.

20140517-222556.jpg

Matthew 5:14-16

Bearing all of this in mind, I very much integrate my soul into my studies.

Spirit Mode = Scholar Mode

Recently, I reached my latest milestones as a Ph.D. Candidate who is ABD (All But Dissertation): the blessing of my Concept Proposal before the HOLYdays and the passing of my Proposal Defense this past Tuesday! GOD has surely blessed me on this journey, and as my classmate, Dr. Alex Garza, who graduated a year ago, told me: it’ll happen in GOD’s time.

Today, the LORD likewise blessed me in continued service to our Church: this time as commentator at Mass for the first time. After going through my proposal, I felt like my voice was cracking. Yet the LORD stayed by my side, and kept me going, and luckily, several congregation members commended me for speaking clearly.

Where am I going with this? I am going with GOD’s calling, which is to establish a Catholic school. The future generations of the Church deserve an opportunity to lead by their faith and values systems, even in their education. Honestly, I am uncertain of what will happen from here, but if I keep listening to GOD, He will lead me toward His plan.

GOD Bless Y’all!!! ¡Díos los bendigan!

Happy Birthday to Bishop Mike mañana!

By the way, my friend, Bishop Pfeifer has double-digits in his age this year, as well as my mom, the Birthday Girl, this Tuesday, and I also will in my next birthday!
