I’ve advanced from my committee to full faculty defense!
As I prepare for my first round of presentation(s), I connect the actual theories of my dissertation study with reaching this ultimate finish line of achieving my doctoral degree …
What Worked for Me?
Exemplary Leadership Practices

Flashback Friday: Acting out a skit for our doctoral program‘s first Halloween luncheon! This was a nice mid-term break from our heavy course load to have fun!
Speaking of PRACTICE, practicing indeed makes perfect in many ways:
- from doing Tae Bo to lose the “Freshman 15” (8-min. workout 8x/day)
- to running through my presentation on my own and with my chair
Athlete Satisfaction
- Satisfaction with Strategy, Ability Utilization plus Training and Instruction ~ taking the tactics necessary to sticking with the program: my professors emphasized our strengths plus accommodated to our audio, visual and kinesthetic learning styles
- Satisfaction with Team Integration and Personal Dedication ~ I was blessed to part of a study group who collaborated well and helped out each other, plus when I felt overwhelmed with test anxiety (so I should empathize with my students who experience speech anxiety), I’d work out {Exhibits A and B} to boost and induce my confidence
* Example: When we took our written first-year luminary comprehensive examinations, I saw my fellow physically active classmate stretching, so I also moved my muscles to bring blood flow to my brain, and during our breaks, I’d step outside the academic building for fresh air and relaxing at the gazebo to clear my head
Plus, I’ve considered mistakes that I’ve made that potentially could have set me back from reaching my goal
What Did NOT Work for Me?
- I lost sight of my “prize” when I focused on external forces, such as a social life or romance ~ which probably would’ve been effective if I had a supportive partner
Reflecting on my growth through this process has made me stronger as a productive person in society, but most of all: one who gives my gifts to GOD!

Happy National Dessert Day!
My peers who’ve preceded me in finishing their doctor of philosophy degrees can agree:
Cleaner and clearer are better.
That means: clean desks and clear minds …
Plus clean PowerPoints to clear our minds!
Two of my esteemed classmates who graduated a few years ago and whose guidance I sought for my paper and slideshow both explicitly pointed out that I most certainly must cut back
Down to 120-140 slides, no more than 150!
As the ☼summer☼ drew to a close ~ during my most recent hurdle (that lasted four months as we entered fall term), my statistics ~ I already reached 300+ slides and reached 300+ pages of my dissertation
Yet that’s way too many to fit into a two-hour presentation (including professors‘ Q&A) ~ so I’ve reduced down to almost ½ so far!

This slide: an indicator that I measured a TON of stats! I ended up taking out 50+ slides last night … Shooting to eliminate more. Next issue: making sure that the fewer slides that I look less cluttered!
Just as I’ve had to minimize my clutter-bug and shutter-bug ways, I’m also de-cluttering / cleaning and clearing up my PowerPoint
That way, I can advance into the next round!

Quick breather from my research writing for refreshment🍮 & reception🍭

📊Stats📉📈 at 💫💸Starbucks☕️ are where it’s at ~ got this comfy cozy horseshoe booth to myself, booyah!
Strolling through campus for a quick snack🍩 ~ chocolate croissant is as close as I can get to a cannoli ~ & fresh 🌟perspective!
It’s business training without the whacking🔫!
Out of the business-savvy shows out there, my personal favorite would have to be the The Sopranos. I’ve always been fascinated with mafia ~ not that I’m interested in joining the mob ~ but because organized crime still involves communication and leadership that I’ve studied and taught all through college and graduate school, such as mobster managers
… but I’m reading a couple of books📚 that are written about his management ~

These 📓readings📔 offer insight on intrapersonal communication * professional relationships * making decisions * managing conflict * solving problems!

With all of the abundant activities that have called for my attention lately, I’ve been mustering up every extra waking moment away to work on my dissertation ~ which is why I’ve actually appreciated these recent snow days.
- Some of my colleagues have considered their own hours per day of dedication on their doctoral research as shift work
- Others have only been able to devote even just a few minutes per day to their study
Lately, I’ve fallen under the latter category, rather than the former. Once upon a time, I was able to spend a whole work day’s worth, but with countless demands, I’m fortunate to invest up to an hour or so; for instance, with the additional studies that my department requires for us to review for our doctoral degrees, I’ve included at least one more per day. Regardless of how much time I’ve been able to write and research, the process is paying off as I keep making progress
Because not a day passes without my discipline and determination to stay focused and deter distractions.

Unless you count my catastrophic pleasant distractions, including my neighbor, who’s welcome to chillax ’til her ♥heart’s♥ content snow or ☼shine☼

As both an educator (college professor, religious education teacher, private tutor) and a student (to finish my doctoral degree this year and had a call to confirm my dissertation chair this week ~ to defend and become DOCTOR this ☼summer☼ then walk this fall) who can empathize with my own students, this ♣spring♣ semester thus far already has made waves!
