Nah, Kelvin … I’m gay, & I’m here to play*

I’m mostly into action films, but during this time of year with ♥LOVE♥ in the air for ♥Valentine’s♥ Day, I don’t mind checking out those chick flicks (the ♥lighthearted♥ ones ~ not those tear-jerkers)!

Bring on the ♥rom-com♥ …

Since Evie suggested for me to set aside one single day out of each month just for myself (aside from the hustle & bustle of school & work ~ notice that we didn’t mention †Church† because I never take a ☼day☼ off from GOD ~ and I admit that I still did homework), after MLK Day in January, this past Friday (after my stress-relieving massage ~ thanks to Lisa with her rolling pin technique and refreshments) was my February “me ☼day☼before the ♥Sweetheart♥ Ball

… which included tapping into my collection of DVDs since I’ve been ♣spring♣-cleaning anyway with my Double A!

IMG_2456

Main Movie of the Day: *Valentine’s Day ~ co-stars from my fave prime time show, Grey’s Anatomy (Patrick Dempsey * Eric Dane * Hector Elizondo), and star from the *must-see* movie of the moment, American Sniper (Bradley Cooper, who sat beside someone else in uniform, Julia Roberts) + Cooper, Dane, Emma Thompson & Jennifer Aniston each star in 2 of these films!

After this Super Bowl Week’s YOLOs and spirits, it’s time to prep for ♥V-Day♥

Therefore, today, this DISPO has gone Beast Mode for V-Mode on this ♥Sweetheart♥ Ball Eve!

As tomorrow’s dinner approaches, I’ve been working out to my fave fitness gurus in their special dance dress moves:

My ♥LOVE♥ for gold and rose gold takes new heights for ♥Valentine’s Day♥ with the ♥Sweetheart Ball♥ about to be thrown down …

This A’GACI dress was exactly what I envisioned: peach and goddess sleeves!

Add to my ♥V-Day♥ ensemble: Forever 21 rose gold platforms!

I’m swaying away from stilettos this time around & strutting my stuff in these platforms to make me taller like a baller! #DISPObustAFlow

With so many yellow & rose gold ♥heart♥ choices to choose from, I actually most likely will adorn my neck with the beautiful ruby †cross† that María Elena gave me as a gift from Assisi Jewels in Italy.

I may top off this ensemble with my rose gold ♥heart♥ & bow Guess? handbag to tote my DSLR cam!

Now that I have my platforms, this DISPO wants to ♪strike a pose♪ {to the tune of Madonna‘s ♫Vogue♫} like Cassey Ho from her Chillout Stretches video! #DISPObustAFlow

Throwback Thursday Tags: Lifestyle & Fitness + Procrastinating Beauty

In ♥ & Soul, Community, Health, Higher Ed, Home Sweet Home, Pro-DiSPO, Public Interest, Relationships, Sports, Technology, Travel, What's Hot, Workin' Woman, Yours Truly on 03/14/2014 at 04:11

In the spirit of Throwback Thursday, after going Tuesday Beauty happy and adding the 2 for Tuesday *bonus* Sweater Weather Tag, I’m accepting these 2013 truth challenges for full disclosure. Enjoy, and if you’ve done either of these tags, please feel free to comment with the link to your answers!

 * Lifestyle & Fitness Tag ~ from GetFitWithLeyla‘s Lifestyle & Fitness TAG video [Questions are in bold; my answers are in italics.]

  1. How fit do you consider yourself to be? Are you happy with the shape you’re in? On a scale from 1-10, I’d say an 8. While I know that I’m fab, I still can stand to lose some flab.
  2. Do you play any sports? I did back in the day ~ as in basketball & tennis 2 decades ago in jr. high ~ then discovered that I’m a much better spectator @ my fave sport: basketball, than I am as a baller… Competitions in which I’ve participated as a grown-up have been races, but I’ve mainly run them to benefit their worthy causes. Now I’m proud to say that I’m part of the 26.2 (full marathon) club & have run in several smaller events (e.g., 5Ks) since then!
    Fiesta Marathon

Shot Gun Bang! Fiesta Marathon‘s my chance to run like a Mustang!

    STC 5K

South Texas College 5K (where I used to teach) ~ I should’ve done more high knees!

  3. Besides those, do you exercise as well? That’s exactly what I do to stay fit nowadays! Please check out my recommendations on the Pretty Fit Way blog & the Pretty Fit iOS app
  4. Do you have any fitness or health related goals? I work out to stay healthy, relieve stress & reduce my risk for disease in the long run.
  5. Which celebrity’s body would you like to have? Does Elaine Dispo count? I’d like to say I’m my own celeb… But if I had to choose someone other than yours truly, I really dig on Jessica Alba’s bod! Plus, I must give myself props on mocking other folks pretty well for Halloween.
    DCC

    *TRUE BLUE* Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader

    Princess Leia Wannabe

I love the Princess Leia hair from Episode IV, but it’s her goddess bod from VI that screams SEXY!

  6. What’s your favorite and/or least favorite exercise? My #1 fave is dancing because I can do it anywhere & everywhere; as a matter of fact, I most recently caught myself just grooving to the chores without even planning to burn calories that way today! My least fave may have to be burpees (jump to plank to squat) because they kick my boot-ay, but they’re definitely effective for my boot-ay!
  7. How important is leading an active and healthy lifestyle for you? Extremely; this is THE way of life, not just for the sake of taking care of our bodies, but also our minds & our souls ~ not to mention our hearts (both literally & figuratively) ~ all the way inside & out!
  8. How much attention to a healthy diet do you pay? On a scale from 1-10, I’d go with a 7. Although I keep track of my calorie consumption & burn, I don’t always pass up my weakness: sweets (e.g., cupcakes)!
  9. What’s your biggest diet secret? I don’t diet. Since I don’t believe in depriving myself from what brings me joy, I’ll at least control my portions & eat in moderation.
  10. Do you smoke, or have you ever smoked in the past? Never ever. I don’t have the desire to mess up my lungs, heart, teeth or skin… So no, thanks!

* Procrastinating Beauty Tag [from FrmHeadToToe Jen‘s Procrastinating Beauty Blogger TAG]

  1. Name a beauty regimen that you rarely do? I’ve never applied primer to my face. I’m not into caking on a mask, as I’m completely content with my concealer, foundation & powder (I don’t always use ALL of the above @ the same time).
  2. Is washing your make-up brushes something that you do regularly? I don’t wash them too frequently because I want them to last, so I don’t use the same ones too often. When I do wash them, I use my M•A•C Brush Cleanser (pictured below).
  3. How long will you last with chipped nail polish? I plead the 5th… on going past the 5th day.
    Spring forward

    Spring forward means…

    Sports Watches

… that it’s time to change my nail color!

  4. How long will you put off buying/replacing a beauty product, even if you need it? I seldom ever need a new beauty product because I usually have a backup supply to replenish once I run out of something.
  5. What is your worst beauty habit? Admittedly, I’ve gone to sleep without removing my makeup & washing my face on more than a few occasions ~ not something I’m proud of, for which there aren’t any legit excuses.
  6. Name something non-beauty related that you put off doing all the time? Decluttering ~ which I’m actually doing during this Spring Break on breaks from my dissertation! Since I’m not that much of a cosmetics hoarder, I don’t have much to purge, but I did get rid of loads of Bath & Body Works nail polish 1½ years ago, way past due.
  7. When going out somewhere, do you leave getting ready to the last minute? Not always; I usually spare 2-3h before I’m supposed to leave for a planned event, so I can devote a little more time on my studies, a project or pleasure-______ (-reading, -surfing ~ as in channel- or net-surfing, etc.) before I take off. If I go the other way around & keep working then have minimal time to shower, hair & makeup + nails, then I don’t do myself justice.
  8. Can you commit to spending bans? I haven’t made any, but I suppose that it’s worth a shot. Now if I only I had before my cosmetics sprees! How lame that my hometown just closed down our only M•A•C shop yesterday after being open for a short while.
  9. How organized are your make-up and nail polish collections? On a scale from 1-10, this should be a solid 9. Check out my acrylic organizer on my dresser here, where I can find everything in place, arranged according to color & category (nails on the left, makeup on the right). The red & clear beads that help keep my eye liners, lip balms & gloss straight in the front right compartment are from the centerpiece of my table at the Sweetheart Ball to celebrate this past Valentine’s Day

Happy Hump Day the Healthy Pretty Fit Way!

Today, I’ll feature food, as a perk to my freelance writing.

When I visited AM Donuts, I was pleased to photograph around the storefront and bakery, as well as to try the main menu items that I intended:

AM Donuts serves Bubble Tea!

AM DonutsBubble Tea & Maple Bacon Bar

The added bonus was that the owner packed his personal favorites for me to take home!

AM Donuts & Croissants

AM Donuts & Croissants Care Package, including *exclusive* Cherry Chocolate Fritter & Red Velvet Cake Donut

Then, when I covered the Claudie C. Royals Banquet on Claudie C. Royals Day, I chowed down even more!

Claudie C. Royals Banquet 2014

Claudie C. Royals Banquet Main Course & Sides + Beverage: Lasagna, Fried Chicken, Corn, Salad, Sweet Tea

Claudie C. Royals Banquet Dessert

Claudie C. Royals Banquet Desserts: Special Strawberry Shortcake Banana Nut Pudding, Lemon & Chocolate Nut Cupcakes, Chocolate Sugar-Dusted Brownies

Today, I wrote about how I ate healthy a week ago then rewarded myself the next day in What I Ate Wednesday and Thursday

Moral of this story:

A good day can lead into another one!

And because I love y’all so much, here’s  how I packed my sweets for the sweet from the sweet on VDay ♥

On this night before VDay, I wish to pass along these items in my Counting BlessingsGratitude Journal:

First of all, I started Thursday with my Adoration Hour. Then, I went about my day…

Excellent Service

  • nice baristas at Starbucks
  • positive consultant at LensCrafters (where I found a new pair of specs), who commended my vision insurance and struck up a conversation about cats with me after seeing my feline on my credit card
  • cheerful friend who was featured twice in the Abilene Reporter-News yesterday, including the article that I wrote about his dad
  • accommodating family who I interviewed at their business, AM Donuts, to feature their location’s offering of boba tea (only one in Abilene) ~ the owner gave me this box of assorted flavors on-the-house!

YOLO: Valentine's Day Eve

Perks of Journalism: Trying New Things!

Don’t these babies look yummy? Among the pastries in this package, I see AM’s exclusive chocolate cherry fritter and red velvet cake donut, so what great ways to ring in Valentine’s Day with these sweet treats from the sweet for the sweet!

Reap Rewards through Positive Reinforcement

In ♥ & Soul, Higher Ed, Home Sweet Home, Pro-DiSPO, Relationships, Yours Truly on 02/11/2014 at 08:22

On this icy winter day, I woke up from having a dream that I thought was worth sharing with the lesson that it taught me: we deserve to earn incentives if we take steps toward our goals. In other words:

Let’s reward ourselves for our accomplishments.

In this dream, I was reading an article about someone whose positive reinforcement would be trip incentives once she’d reach an accomplishment… Then I realized that sometimes I procrastinate instead of motivate myself to keep working on my dissertation by rewarding myself before I do my tasks. So, today, on another cold one, I pledge to reward myself after I invest my effort!

Here’s how I’ll provide positive reinforcement for persisting through my research:

I know, I know, this Dispo always busts a flow. You can always rely on yours truly to find a time to rhyme!

Now you also can count on me to give thanks everyday! Whenever I wake up, I’ll warm up with these stretches as I pray and praise GOD for the many Blessings with which he has blessed my loved ones and me. Before I go to bed, I’ll extend the magnitude of my gratitude to Him again…

Today’s blessings follow, as well as more from this past week and upcoming below. Wishing you all a winning Happy St. Valentine’s Day/Singles Awareness Day, as well as Heart Disease Awareness/Heart Health Month! Love you all, Team: Dr. D Players!

Champion

In ♥ & Soul, Community, Health, Higher Ed, Home Sweet Home, Pro-DiSPO, Public Interest, Relationships, Sports, Technology, What's Hot, Workin' Woman, Yours Truly on 02/03/2014 at 17:46

Happy Super Bowl XLVIII Monday!!!

Today’s Word of the Day is: Champion.

Almost two years ago exactly, I judged this Skills USA speech tournament, in which the students presented their interpretations of the word “champion.” What does it mean to you?

For me, a champion is someone who takes a winning approach to life, even in moments of defeat, one who still demonstrates good sportsmanship and holds her/his head up high without giving up. Last night, the NFC Champs won the “Big Game,” but the AFC Champs still are champions in my eyes because they still maintained a championship attitude. The heart of a champion does not feel like a loser even when it is beat.

This is what I aim to accomplish in my dissertation research and after I earn my Ph.D.: to show coaches that genuine leadership is based on developing their players into champions in life, not just in the game. I myself also am practicing this championship lifestyle by persisting along the way…

Here is a quote that I posted on my FB Fan Page:

“The #character of a #man is to #establish something where no one else has ever done before.” ~ Reggie Miller about his time w/his only NBA team, the Indiana Pacers

Before I get back to writing my study, I am about to go beast mode for energy. Speaking of which, here’s some comic relief that I posted on my friend’s Facebook last week:

  • My Buddy: How does a guy get man boobs?
  • Yours truly: By not working out their #pecs! #Dudes with #moobs must hit the #weights & work on their #BenchPress both #flat & on #incline for more #definition + try the #ChestFly… Go #BeastMode!
  • My Buddy: Thanks, Elaine. I’ll diet hardcore the next couple of weeks…
  • Yours truly: ¡El gusto es mío, mi amigo! I just sent ya an invite to the #BestWorkoutForMen #app for #iPhone which is the #male version of the 1 that I contribute to: #PrettyFit. Best wishes on the #diet but I hope you also add more #exercise into the #mix so that way you could #reward yourself w/a #YOLO (i.e., #PanDulce) every once in awhile…

Without further ado, here are my latest on the Pretty Fit Way:

Other winners in my life include my Double A-TeamAsia and Annie, who my good friend and spiritual mentor, Bishop Mike, has so graciously blessed during his leadership of the Diocese of San Angelo, before his retirement and the ordination of Bishop Sis one week ago. Here are A&A‘s and my heartfelt Valentine’s greetings and their photo full of love:

Cultural Diversity: Among the Many Blessings of Our World

In ♥ & Soul, Community, Health, Higher Ed, Home Sweet Home, Pro-DiSPO, Public Interest, Relationships, Sports, Technology, Travel, What's Hot, Yours Truly on 01/22/2014 at 20:22

Happy Belated MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. Day!

Thanks to the Reverend Doctor King, whose quotes you can find on my FB Fan Page, our world is more open to diversity to this day. Many of us have opportunities to offer our gifts from GOD and learn more about others’ cultures because MLK’s message continues to resonate…

One of GOD’s gifts that I offered was at Church this past weekend. That was when I was lector for the first time at my parish. The good LORD gave me strength as I stood before our congregation and proclaimed His Word from the Books of Isaiah and First Corinthians, as well as Psalm 40. Thank GOD for using me as His servant and instrument to speak through Him.

Also, thanks to GOD, I keep making progress with my dissertation study. Now that I may have an adequate amount of NCAA schools in Texas from whom I have approval to recruit student-athletes to participate in my research, my next step is to acquire approval from the my school, OLLU’s Institutional Review Board. All I can do is move forward…

Another way to move forward is to keep moving! There are plenty of ways to stay Pretty Fit, as I’ve recommended on the app. Even while you’re about to eat and waiting for your meal to be ready, you can stay on-the-move and in-the-groove! With Heart Disease Awareness and Black Heritage/History month coming up in February…

FYI: Above link gives props to my mom’s cooking!
